MURCHISON FALLS NP – 4 days, 3 nights
More details on sight seeing activities on this safari
Day 1 {lunch & dinner}
This morning, transfer to Zziwa Ranch, a two-hour drive from Kampala, along the road on the way to Murchison Falls National Park. Rhinos roam freely in an area of 7,000 ha of dry combretum savannah, laced with swamps and the cactus-like euphorbia candelabrum trees. While you track the rhinos, visit the information centre and craft shop, look out for bush buck, leopard, Uganda kob, oribi, crocodiles, hippo and other wildlife present on the ranch. The bird life is abundant, with even the rare shoebill stork present in the Lugogo Swamps. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary offers peace and tranquility in beautiful surroundings.
In the afternoon, approach the forest along the main road and you will be initially struck by the forest’s sense of expansiveness; a lush verdant swathe across to the distant horizon. Paradoxically, when you follow the walking trails, it is the intimacy of the rainforest that most impresses : the closed canopy overhead, the towering trees and delicate ferns that line the trails, the mysterious calling and rustling of birds and monkeys hidden deep in the greenery. The forest is rightly celebrated for the rich variety of flora and fauna. At least 200 different types of tree species are found in this forest along with hundreds of different flowery plants. Of the large mammals, primates are the most visible, with 13 recorded species representing 25% of the African primate checklist. With particular interest are the Colobus monkeys and the chimps often seen from the forest trails during the rainy season. Other primates likely to be encountered over the course of the visit are l’hoest’s monkey, silver monkey, vervet monkey, olive baboon, grey – cheeked mangabey and red – tailed monkey.
Day 2 {breakfast, lunch & dinner}
Proceed to spectacular site at the top of the Falls where you can see the Nile's beauty perfected! Marvel at the Nile, compressing from 50 meters to squeeze through a 6 metre canyon dropping 40 metres with a thunderous roar creating a beautiful rainbow, a plume of spray and the best thing that happened to the Nile "the Murchison Falls". Superlatives like “awesome” “stupendous” “fantastic” and “wow” have been used to describe this amazing spectacle. Evening forays with the sun setting over the blue mountains of Congo as a backdrop provides excellent opportunities to see lion, leopard, giant forest hog, Cape buffalo, elephants, defassa waterbuck, Uganda Kob, Topi and bush buck.
Day 3 {breakfast, lunch & dinner}
After an early breakfast, proceed for a game drive. Elephant, Cape buffalo, Rothschild's giraffe, Uganda kob, hartebeest and waterbuck are commonly seen. You may also spot oribi, bushbuck, Bohor reedbuck, bush duiker, warthog and bushpig. Large carnivores include lion, leopard and spotted hyena.
After lunch, go for a boat safari upstream the calm Victoria Nile. En-route, marvel at the toothsome hippos, crocodiles and over this 17 km stretch you may see elephant, waterbuck and Uganda Kob. This is also a zone of many bird species like Goliath heron, Egyptian goose, pelican bee-eater, kingfisher, hornbill, cormorant and the rare shoebill stork. The boat will stop just tens of metres from the sinister, frothing and bubbling base of the falls.
